A Narrative Inquiry about an Art Therapy Media for Children with Disabilities and Art Therapist

Abstract
This inquiry originated in a question, ¡°What is a desired art media in the therapy for both disabled children participants and an art therapist?¡± In seeking its answer during the therapy, the media chosen by these children was narratives about conveying the fantasy of life and narcissism and turning the media into play freely. With observing how these disabled children experienced and played with the media they selected, this inquiry adopted a narrative inquiry method to convey their language, emotions, breathing, and gestures in her honest stories. Participants were one disabled children and the art therapist who was the inquirer of this research. This inquiry purposed to answers to followed questions; ¡°In art therapy, how children with disabilities experience art media?¡±, ¡°What is the significance of the art media for both children participants and the art therapist?¡± In result, the therapist not only discovered that the media selected freely by participants turned into play and this allowed her to express her fantasies and to be creative, but also could believe the attraction of the media. In addition, in this inquiry, the therapist recognized the unconscious distress which was studiously avoided, discovered its cause, and began to resolve it. Through this inquiry, the therapist expects that art therapists can believe the potential of disabled children and keep the power of the media¡¯s attraction in view during the process of the therapy. The therapist hopes that people sympathize with the fact that the attraction of media enables everyone to immersed in and to make play and creativity, and that can be the first step of the therapy.
